	*Distribuzione di Xenopus laevis* secondo IUCN**

La specie è originaria dell'Africa. Diffusa dall'Angola meridionale, Namibia e Sud Africa a nord ovest fino al Kenya, Uganda e nord est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo, non è diffusa nella zona della foresta pluviale ma popola le zone settentrionali confinanti dalla Repubblica Centroafricana al Cameroon ed alla Nigeria centrale. Lo xenopo liscio è stato introdotto con acclimatazione in Europa (Francia ed Inghilterra, Stati Uniti e Cile. Recententemente la specie è stata segnalata a Java (Indonesia). Nel suo areale originario lo xenopo vive dal livello del mare fino a circa 3.000 metri di quota (monti più alti dell'Africa orientale).
