L'areale della specie comprende soltanto in una ristretta zona delle Alpi occidentali, a cavallo del confine tra Italia e Francia. In Italia è presente nella valli della zona alpina del fiume Po, Pellice e Germanasca. In francia è diffusa slo in val Guil. S. lanzai è stata segnalata anche nelle Alpi Marittime, nella provincia di Cuneo. La segnalazione si basa su di un unico esemplare conservato al Museo La Specola di Firenze, cartellinato come proveniente da "Antracque", che è un probabile errore per Entracque, Valdieri (Cuneo). La specie non è stata in seguito rinvenuta a Entracque o nelle sue vicinanze. Ribéron (2003) ritiene che questo dimostri una progressiva contrazione della diffusione della specie, ma la sua affermazione si fonda solo sull'unico esemplare museale. La salamandra del Lanza ha un range altitudinale compreso tra i 1.200 ed i 2.600. La presenza record segnalata a 2.800 metri a Lago delle Forciolline, è molto probabilmente errata (Andreone & Sindaco 1999; Vences et al. 2003b; Andreone et al. 2004).
