Note sulla sistematica - Il "Catalog of Fishes" della California Academy of Sciences ritiene valide tre sottospecie: Acipenser baerii baerii Brandt, 1869, Acipenser baerii stenorrhynchus Nikolskii 1896, ed Acipenser baerii baicalensis Nikolskii 1896. L'area di diffusione di A. baerii baerii è limitata al bacino del fiume Ob. A. baerii stenorrhynchus vive nei bacini della Siberia orientale, è presente nei sistemi dei fiumi Alazeya, Anabar, Indigirka, Khatanga, Lena, Lolyma, Olenek, Pyasina, Yana e Yenisei. (Ruban, 1997; Ruban & Akimova, 1991; 1993; Ruban & Panaiotidi, 1994). A. baerii baikalensis è endemica del Lago Baikal. Studi recenti mettono in dubbio la validità di queste sottospecie, suggerendo che A. baerii possa essere una specie monotipica, in grado di formare popolazioni continue nei grandi sistemi fluviali (Ruban, 1999). Opinione condivisa da Maurice Kottelat e Jörg Freyof, autori a cui facciamo riferimento in questo lavoro.
