Note sulla sistematica - Vedere l'introduzione della famiglia per i commenti generali. Sono note "razze" stagionali, migratorie e non migratorie. Holcík et al. (in Holcík, 1989: 298-305) riporta differenze tra varie popolazioni ed è richiesta una dettagliata comparazione. La popolazione del Mar Baltico è notevolmente diversa dalle popolazioni dell'Atlantico e del Mediterraneo per avere un minor numero di scudi dorsali e laterali; ricerche future potranno forse dimostrare che si tratti di una specie distinta.

Note sulla nomenclatura - Rafinesque (1820: 79) ha catalogato Acipenser attilus senza descrizione, e Bonaparte (1846: 21) l'ha catalogato in sinonimia, indicando Rafinesque come autore, ma senza dare riferimenti. Non potendo trovare altri usi di questo nome nelle carte di Rafinesque a disposizione del Kottelat, ha preferito elencare questo nome come nomen nudum; anche se potrebbe essere citato in alcuni scritti rari di Rafinesque. L'uso più vecchio del nome è disponibile da Gray (1851).
