Note sulla sistematica - Si tratta di un complesso polimorfo, nel quale rientrano parecchie specie supposte che vennero riunite da Borsieri e poi, nel corso di più approfondite indagini, da Kiener e Spillman. Per lungo tempo furono denominate A. rissoi e A. boyeri le popolazioni marine, A. mochon oppure A. sarda gli stock d'acqua salmastra, A. lacustris le popolazioni d'acqua dolce.

Note sulla nomenclatura - I seguenti nomi scientifici: Atherina mochon (1829), Atherina lacustris (1835) e Atherina rissoí (1835), assegnati ai soggetti marini, lacustri e salmastri e tuttora utilizzati da molti studiosi, sono sinonimi di Atherina boyeri (1810).
