Nomenclatura valida come Alosa kessleri (Grimm 1886), per Whitehead 1985:201, Reshetnikov et al. 1997:727, Dorofeeva 1998:26. Località tipo: delta del fiume Volga, Astrakhan. Lectotipo: ZIN 15925. Paralectotipi: ZIN 15922 (1). Lectotipo designato da Berg 1913:32.

Specie diffusa nel bacino del Mar Caspio, risale i maggiori fiumi afferenti (Volga, Ural) per riprodursi.
