Note sulla sistematica - Le popolazioni (anche di località vicine) presentano importanti differenze di livrea, morfologia e habitat. Questa variabilità porta al riconoscimento di molte di queste popolazioni come taxa distinti. Ad esempio, Kottelat & Freyhoff (2007) trattano le popolazioni danubiana e balcanica come unica specie. In ogni caso, le popolazioni balcaniche di Sabanejewia richiedono un approfondito riesame critico, per stabilirne definitivamente status sistematico.

Distribuzione di Sabanejewia balcanica secondo IUCN

 

Specie diffusa nel bacini del fiume Danubio, nel fiume Maritza ed in altri bacini tributari del Mare Egeo, dal fiume Gallikos al fiume Pinios.
