Özulug & Freyhof 2007:243 sono primi revisori, scegliendo istanbulensis rispetto al suo sinonimo spancae, anche se entrambe le specie sono presenti nella stessa pubblicazione. Distribuzione di Alburnus istanbulensis secondo IUCN

 

 

In arancione la zona di distribuzione verificata, in giallo le zone dove la presenza della specie è probabile. Torrenti costieri della Turchia europea da Karasu (bacino del mar di Marmara) al Papuç (bacino del Mar Nero), e bacino del lago Sapanca (Turchia).
