Barbus balcanicus Kotlík, Tsigenopoulos, Ráb & Berrebi. 2002. Two new "Barbus" species from the Danube River basin, with redescription of "B. petenyi" (Teleostei: Cyprinidae). Opinioni - Nomenclatura valida come Barbus balcanicus Kotlík, Tsigenopoulos, Ráb & Berrebi 2002. Località tipo: fiume Krupaja (affluente del fiume Mlava, bacino del fiume Danubio), a Milanovac, vicino a Krepoljin, Serbia, ex Jugoslavia (circa 44°16'N, 21°37'E). Tipo: NMW 94609. Paratipi: CMK 17002 (2), MNHN 2001-2675 (3), NMW 94610-94611 (3), ZFMK 22321-22335 (15).

Note sulla sistematica - Specie considerata forma di B. petenyi. Da studi genetici sviluppati da Kotlík, P., Tsigenopoulos, C. S. and P. Ráb e P. Berrebi (2002), sulle popolazioni balcaniche, risulta una cospicua diversità nelle sequenze del DNA mitocondriale del citocromo b, primo 594bp, tra le varie popolazioni una volta ascritte a B. petenyi. In base ai risultati ottenuti, B. balcanicus, risulta specie valida.

Distribuzione di B. balcanicus Secondo IUCN.

  

La specie è diffusa nei monti Dinarici in Serbia, Slovenia, e molto probabilmente anche in Bosnia e Herzegovina e Croatia, nei bacini dei fiumi affluenti da sud nel medio Danubio, tra i quali  i maggiori sono la Sava ed il Velika Morava (inclsa la diga di Vlasinsko Jezero). Molto probabilmente è presente anche nel bacino del fiume Drava in Slovenia. B. balcanicus è segnalato nel fiume Nera, ed apparentemente vive anche nel fiume Cerna. Vive anche nei fiumi Archar e Beli Vit, affluenti di destra del basso Danubio nella zona ovest dei monti Stara Planina in Bulgaria. Fuori dal bacino del Danubio, sono conosciute popolazioni apparentemente conspecifiche in alcuni fiumi del bacino del mare Egeo, nel nord della Grecia: il Gallikos, il Vardar (= Axios) e l'Aliakmon. L'ultimo fiume rappresenta il limite sud dell'area di distribuzione. La specie è presente nel lago Vegoritise molto probabilmente anche nel bacino del fiume Vardar nella Repubblica di Macedonia. La popolazione più occidentale di questa specie sembra sia presente nel bacino dell'Isonzo, afferente al mar Adriatico, in Italia e Slovenia.
