Distribuzione originaria di Barbus barbus secondo IUCN

 

Specie diffusa a nord dei Pirenei e delle Alpi, dal bacino del fiume Adour (Francia) ad est fino al fiume Neman (Lituania. Russia), nei bacini dei fiumi afferenti all'Oceano Atlantico, Mare del Nord, Mar Baltico e in quelli francesi afferenti al Mediterraneo. Nel bacino del Mar Nero è presente nel bacino dei fiumi Danubio e Dniepr. La specie era originariamente diffusa soltanto nei bacini inglesi del versante orientale, dal sud est fino allo Yorkshire a nord.
