Distribuzione di B petenyi secondo IUCN.

 

La specie è presente nei fiumi e torrenti collinari e montani del bacino del medio corso del fiume Tibisco (Tisza), uno dei maggiori affluenti del Danubio centrale, e nel bacino del basso Danubio nei corsi d'acqua del sud e dell'est dei Carpazi. La popolazione residente più a nord vive nel fiume Mures, affluente di sinistra del Tibisco, in Transilvania. B. petenyi è diffuso negli affluenti di destra del basso Danubio del monti Balcani. Fuori del bacino danubiano la specie è presente nel bacino del fiume Kamtchyia, tributario del mar Nero proveniente dai monti Stara Planina nei Balcani. Questo ultimo fiume rappresenta il limite meridionale della diffusione della specie.
