Opinioni: nomenclatura valida come "Messinobarbus albanicus" (Steindachner 1870), secondo Bianco 1998:128; nomenclatura valida come "Barbus albanicus" Steindachner 1870, per Kottelat 1997:47, Tsignenopoulos & Berrebi 2000:169, Economidis & Herzig-Straschil in Banarescu & Bogutskaya 2003:23. Catalogo: Tortonese 1961:184. Località tipo: lago di Scutari, Albania. Tipo: nessuno. Sintipi: (molti) MSNG 9043 (2), NMW 53651 (2).

	Distribuzione di Barbus albanicus

Secondo alcuni studiosi questo ciprinide sarebbe endemico del solo Lago di joannina (o Giannina) in Epiro (Grecia), mentre per altri risulterebbe esclusivo dei laghi e dei corsi d'acqua della regione geografica di Zagori che comprende l'Epiro greco e quello albanese. E' presente nei fiumi Arachtos, Kalamas e nel lago Pamvotida.
