Note sulla sistematica - Due sottospecie sono state di recente elevate a buone specie in base a studi genetici e morfologici (Naseka & Freyhof 2004): Gobio k. antipai Banarescu, 1953,  diffusa nel delta e corso inferiore del Danubio ed alla confluenza di alcuni suoi affluenti; Gobio k. banaticus Banarescu, 1953, dei bacini dei fiumi Timis, Caras, Nera, Banat (affluenti del Danubio).

Distribuzione di Romanogobio kessleri secondo IUCN

 

Dnestr e suoi affluenti. Affluenti del Danubio dalla Cecoslovacchia fino alla Bulgaria e alla Bessarabia, pare che sia assente dal corso principale del Danubio stesso. Regione della Vistola. La specie è segnalata nei seguenti paesi: Austria, Bulgaria, Croazia, Repubblica Ceca, Ungheria, Repubblica di Moldova, Polonia, Romania, Serbia e Montenegro, Slovacchia, Slovenia, Ucraina.
