Distribuzione di Rutilus rutilus secondo IUCN

 

L'areale originario della specie è molto vasto, dalle Isole britanniche e dalla Francia ad ovest, fino alla Siberia ad est, a sud non supera le Alpi, i Pirenei,  e non giunge alla Penisola Ellenica. R. rutilus è presente anche in tutti i bacini afferenti al Mar Caspio ed al Mar Nero, con l'eccezione della costa anatolica della Turchia. In Italia la specie è alloctona. Il Rutilo è stato introdotto, volontariamente o accidentalmente, in molti bacini del centro e del settentrione, insieme a materiale da ripopolamento di provenienza estera o per irresponsabile scelta deliberata.
