Note sulla sistematica - La sistematica della specie è controversa. Alla luce di recenti studi genetici e molecolari che ne hanno evidenziato la divergenza, molte popolazioni ascritte a questa specie si stanno rivelando come specie valide.

Distribuzione di Squalius cephalus secondo IUCN

 

L'area di diffusione di S. cephalus comprende i bacini dei fiumi afferenti al Mare del Nord, Mar Baltico, Mar Bianco, Mar di Barents, Mar Caspio, i bacini fluviali delle coste settentrionali del Mar Nero, e quelli della costa atlantica dal Canale della Manica fino al bacino del fiume Adour in Francia. La specie è presente anche in Gran Bretagna (fino al 56° N), in Svezia (fino circa alla latitudine di Stoccolma), e nella Finlandia Meridionale. Nel bacino del Mediterraneo è presente nella Francia meridionale dal fiume Var all'Hérault. Introdotta, con acclimatazione, in Italia ed in altri paesi.
