Distribuzione di Lota lota

 

L'area di diffusione della bottatrice è molto vasta, comprende gran parte dell'emisfero settentrionale, America inclusa. In Europa è assente dalle regioni meridionali. In Italia la specie fu introdotta nel 1800, vive soltanto in alcuni laghi e fiumi dell'Italia settentrionale compresi tra il fiume Toce e il Lago di Garda (limite meridionale della distribuzione di questa specie). La sua presenza è stata rilevata anche a quote superiori ai 1200 m, fino ad un massimo di 1900 m.
