Note sulla sistematica - Secondo Fricke et al., 2018, Le popolazioni della Siberia orientale e nordamericane dovrebbero essere considerate specie a separata rispetto a quelle della Siberia occidentale ed europee: Lota maculosa.

Distribuzione di Lota lota secondo IUCN

 

 

In Europa è diffusa dal bacino del fiume Loira (Francia) ad est fino ai bacini afferenti al Mar Bianco, Mare di Barents, e Mar Glaciale Artico, nel bacino superiore del fiume Volga, nel bacino occidentale del Mar Caspio, nei fiumi afferenti al Mar Nero, e nel bacino del fiume Rodano (Francia). In Italia la specie è è alloctona, introdotta verso la fine dell’800 e gli inizi del 900. Storicamente presente nell'Inghilterra orientale, è adesso estinta. In Siberia si incontra dai Monti Urali al bacino del fiume Lena. Assente da Penisola Iberica, Italia centrale e meridionale, Bacino del Mare Adriatico, Grecia, Irlanda, Gran Bretagna settentrionale ed occidentale, e Francia sud occidentale. Le popolazioni del Nord America e della Siberia orientale sono attualmente considerate come appartenenti ad una specie distinta: Lota maculosa.
