Distribuzione di Gastrosteus aculeatus

 

In Europa la specie è presente nella maggior parte dei fiumi afferenti al mare del nord ed al mar baltico, dove si sovrappone con G. gymnurus, inoltre è presente lungo le coste scandinave e nei bacini afferenti al mar Bianco. Lo spinarello è diffuso anche nella regione del Pacifico del nord: dalla Corea al mare di Bering, fino alla baia di Monterey.
