Note sulla sistematica - IUCN riporta che la specie P. aralensis, diffusa nel bacino del Mare d'Aral, considerata sottospe-cie di P. platygaster, sia in realtà una specie distinta.

Distribuzione di Pungitius platygaster secondo IUCN

 

 

Specie diffusa nel basso corso dei fiumi afferenti alle coste settentrionali del Mar Nero, Mar caspio, ed al Mare d'Aral. Nel bacino del Danubio risale fino a Belgrado. Popolazioni isolate sono segnalate nei bacini dei fiumi Aliakmon e Axios in Grecia. Presente nel corso medio ed inferiore dei fiumi Amu-Darya, Syr-Darya, e Sary-su, e nel corso inferiore del fiume Chu. Segnalata nel bacino superiore del fiume Ob (fiume Nura, lago Kurgal'dzhin). Negli anni '80 ha invaso il bacino del fiume Ishim (affluente dell'Irtysh) diffondendosi a valle nelle province russe di Ust'-Ishim e Tyumen.
