Specie originaria del Nord America: dal Nuovo Brunswick in Canada alla Carolina del sud negli Stati Uniti. Largamente introdotta in tutto il mondo. In Europa è stata immessa quasi dovunque, con eccezione di quei paesi dove la temperatura impedisce la sopravvivenza della specie.
