L'area di diffusione originaria della specie comprende i bacini del versante pacifico dell'America centrale dal fiume Rio Sucio (El Salvador), fino al fiume Rio Suchiate (Guatemala), ed i bacini del versante atlantico dal fiume Rio Patuca (Honduras) al fiume Rio Jutiapa (Guatemala). La specie è stata introdotta in numerosi paesi fuori dalla sua area di origine. Esemplari acquistati per acquari ornamentali sono spesso rilasciati dai proprietari in natura. In Italia esistono alcune popolazioni acclimatate nelle acque termali di Toscana e Lazio, ma le segnalazioni di esemplari catturati in natura sono sempre più frequenti e diffuse a macchia di leopardo su tutto il territorio.
