Specie diffusa in Africa ed Eurasia: fiumi del sistema Niger-Benue, di Sassandra e di Bandama, fbacini del sud del Marocco, del Sahara, del Senegal e della Costa d'Avorio, bacino del fiume Volta, bacino Ciad-Shari, fiumi Ubangi-uele-Ituri (Repubblica Democratica del Congo), laghi Mobutu e bacino del Nilo e del Giordano. Diversi paesi riferiscono l'impatto ecologico avverso dopo l'introduzione. In Europa le tilapie vengono regolarmente allevate per scopi alieutici ed alimentari e spesso ne viene tentata l'acclimatazione (Belgio, Slovacchia, Germania, Olanda, Russia ecc.).
