Distribuzione europea di Oreochromis niloticus

 
?

La specie è autoctona dell'Africa. Attualmente è largamente diffusa nei fiumi costieri di Israele, nel bacino del Nilo dal lago Alberto fino al delta; nei bacini del lago Ciad e dei fiumi Niger, Benue, Volta, Gambia e Senegal. Ampiamente allevata in ittiocoltura è stata immessa, volontariamente od accidentalmente, nelle acque interne di molti paesi, creando spesso problemi all'ecologia autoctona. In Europa le tilapie vengono regolarmente allevate per scopi alieutici ed alimentari e spesso ne viene tentata l'acclimatazione (Belgio, Slovacchia, Germania, Olanda, Russia ecc.). In Italia la specie è segnalata in alcuni corsi d'acqua del mantovano, a stretto contatto con gli scarichi caldi delle centrali, nell'area della Maremma toscana, e forse acclimatata nel lago costiero di Lesina, in Puglia (Scordella G., Lumare F., Conides A. and Papaconstantinou C, 2003), ma le segnalazioni devono essere confermate.
