Nomenclatura specifica valida come Benthophilus kessleri Berg 1927, vedere Reshetnikov et al. 1997:753, Vasil'eva 1998:128, Pinchuk & Miller in Miller 2004:201, Bogutskaya & Naseka 2004:217, Boldyrev & Bogutskaya 2007:47, Neilson & Stepien 2009:96. Distribuzione di Benthophilus kessleri

  

 

Specie endemica diffusa nelle acque costiere orientali del Mar Caspio centrale, da Capo Urdyuk a sud fino a Capo Kuuli e Krasnovodsk. Presente nel Mar Caspio meridionale  secondo Naseka & Bogutskaya (2009). Non confermata la presenza in acque iraniane (Coad, 2003).
