Compare inizialmente come nomen nudum in Iljin 1949:28, non disponibile perché privo di descrizione allegata. L'ortografia originale è leobergius e probabilmente tale scrittura deve essere mantenuta (art. 31). Sinonimo senior, combinazione originale, nomenclatura ICZN non valida. Opinioni - Sinonimo di Benthophilus stellatus (Sauvage 1874), ma valida sottospecie come da descrizione, vedere Coad 1995:30, Reshetnikov et al. 1997:753, Vasil'eva 1998:131. Menzione, con nome emendato a leobergi ed attribuito a Ragimov (Rahimov) 1978, vedere Kottelat 1997:176. Tipo - Lectotipo ZISP 23128.  Lectotipo designato da Boldyrev & Bogutskaya 2007:6, scegliendo l'esemplare maschio di 48 mm a pag. 60 un esemplare maschio di 85 mm a pag. 63 in figura 28a. Per Eschmeyer come lectotipo dovrebbe essere adottato l'esemplare maschio di 83 mm presente nello stesso gruppo di esemplari esaminato da Boldyrev e Bogutskaya. Sintipi - ZISP 10891 (1).
