Note sulla sistematica - Knipowitschia è talvolta considerato sinonimo di Pomatoschistus, opinione basata solo su studi di K. caucasica. In attesa di studi più approfonditi comprendenti altre specie, Freyhoff & Kottelat (2007) mantengono i due generi distinti. La variabilità morfologica ed ecologica di K. caucasica suggerisce che si tratti di un complesso formato da diverse specie.
