Kessler tratta 3 varietà prive di nome scientifico, "a" catturata a 336 piedi di profondità, "b" catturata a  308 e 245 piedi di profondità, e "c" catturata a 1750 piedi di profondità. Spesso ciyata come longicaudatus in letteratura. Sinonimo senior, combinazione originale, nomenclatura ICZN non valida. Come neotipo è stato scelto da Pinchuk 1978:797 l'esemplare ZISP 3876, ma dovrebbe essere disponibile il sintipo conservato al BMNH.
