Località tipo - Fiume Maritza, vicino a Plovdiv, Rumelia orientale, parte balcanica della Bulgaria. Tipo - Nessuno. Sintipi - NMW 58144 (3). Anhelt & Mikschi (2008) trattano, a quanto pare in modo non corretto, come olotipo l'esemplare con sigla NMW 58144.1, fornendo inoltre informazioni sulla data di pubblicazione.

Distribuzione europea di Proterorhinus semilunaris secondo IUCN

 

 

Specie indigena del bacino occidentale del mar Nero e dei fiumi Maritza e Strimone nel bacino nord orientale del mare Egeo. Storicamente presente nel fiume Danubio, dal delta fino a circa l'altezza di Vienna, dagli anni '70 ha esteso il suo areale  alla Germania meridionale. Segnalata nel 1999 nel fiume Reno, ha raggiunto l'Olanda nel 2002. Dall'area di origine nel fiume Bug e nel corso inferiore del fiume Dniepr è risalita a monte fino in Bielorussia. Segnalata in Polonia da 2008. Giunta accidentalmente con lo svuotamento dell'acqua di sentina di navi provenienti dal mar Nero nella regione dei Grandi Laghi in Nord America (1990).
