Note sulla sistematica - Platichtys flesus necessita di una revisione tassonomica critica, con monitoraggio esteso in tutta la sua area di distribuzione per determinare lo status sistematico delle varie popolazioni. Sembra che sotto il nome di P. flesus, possano essere presenti alcune valide specie. Ad esempio gli autori del "Catalog of Fishes" della California Academy of Sciences riportano Pleuronectes luscus Pallas, 1814, come specie valida con il nome Platichtys luscus e con distribuzione comprendente in mar Nero, Il mare di Azov, ed il mar Mediterraneo nord orientale, e la popolazione introdotta nel mar Caspio apparterrebbe a P. luscus e non a P. flesus.

Se, come sembra a tutti gli effetti (vedere Fricke et al. 2007), allora probabilmente i sinonimi: Platessa glabra Rathke 1837, Pleuronectes italicus Günther 1862, e Platessa flesus var. marmorata Nordmann 1840, dovrebbero essere attribuiti a P. luscus e non a P. flesus. In attesa di ulteriori chiarimenti continuiamo a trattare i due gruppi come unica specie, ma pronti a ritrattarne lo status appena lo status delle varie popolazioni di P. flesus sarà chiarito.
