Note sulla sistematica - S. nigripinnis è una delle quattro specie simpatriche del genere Salmo che vivono nel Loch Melvin in Irlanda. Viene considerata una sottospecie (Salmo trutta nigripinnis) in Ferguson & Taggart (1991) e come specie da Ferguson (1986: 1) e Cawdery & Ferguson (1988: 276).
