Note sulla sistematica - Si tratta della trota Gillaroo, una delle quattro specie simpatriche del genere Salmo, che vivono nel Loch Melvin in Irlanda. Viene considerata sottospecie (Salmo trutta stomachius) in Ferguson & Taggart (1991) e specie in Ferguson (1986: 1) ed in Cawdery & Ferguson (1988: 276). Anche una popolazione del Loch Neagh, in Irlanda, viene chiamata Gillaroo, ma resta da dimostrare se sia conspecifica con la popolazione del Loch Melvin. I dati forniti da Ferguson (1986: 7) e da Croizer & Ferguson (1986: 461), suggeriscono che la presenza del Gillaroo nel Loch Neagh non sia ben documentata, propongono che si tratti di errata identificazione durante l'osservazione di individui di vari stocks.
