Note sulla sistematica - Il nome trota di mare, inteso come nome specifico, non è corretto. Ogni stock di Salmo trutta, ove sussistano le necessarie caratteristiche di salinità e temperatura, è in grado di svolgere in mare una parte del proprio ciclo vitale. Esistono comunque popolazioni che hanno maggior propensione per il comportamento anadromo.
