Note sulla sistematica - Ferguson (1981) ha studiato la sistematica dei salmerini irlandesi esaminando i modelli di allozima e delle proteine di esemplari catturati in diversi bacini lacustri, inclusi i quattro delle specie identificate da Regan. Da tali dati sono emersi indicatori della differenziazione genetica tra le varie popolazioni, in grado di datare il loro isolamento a circa 50.000 anni fa (prima dell'ultima regressione glaciale). Altri dati elaborati mediante elettroforesi hanno evidenziato come tutte le popolazioni di salmerini irlandesi si siano originate da un comune antenato, esistito circa 80.000 100.000 anni fa e probabilmente riconducibile a S. alpinus.
