Note tassonomiche - Specie a lungo nota solo dalla descrizione originale, basata su materiale proveniente dalle Isole Orcadi. Questa o una specie simile è stata recentemente scoperta a Loch Mealt nell'isola di Skye in Scozia. La seguente diagnosi si basa in gran parte su quest'ultima popolazione.

Distribuzione di Salvelinus inframundus secondo IUCN

  

 

Isole Orcadi (Heldale Water, Hoy Island), dove la specie si presume estinta (ultima segnalazione nel 1908). Una nuova popolazione è forse presente nel Loch Mealt, Isle of Skye, Scozia, Regno Unito di Gran Bretagna.
