Note tassonomiche - Specie a lungo nota solo dalla località tipo citata nella descrizione originale. Questa o una specie simile è stata recentemente scoperta in vari laghi della Scozia settentrionale. La seguente diagnosi si basa in parte su queste nuove popolazioni.

Distribuzione di Salvelinus mallochi secondo IUCN

  

 

La località tipo citata da Regan (1909) per S. mallochi è Loch Scourie, Sutherlandshire, Scozia, Gran Bretagna, ma in Scozia non sembrano esistere laghi con questo nome, probabilmente si tratta di Loch Bhadaidh Daraich, il lago adiacente al paese di Scourie nel nord del Sutherland. La specie è probabilmente presente in altri laghi della Scozia.
