Note tassonomiche - Specie a lungo nota solo dalla località tipo citata nella descrizione originale. Questa o una specie simile è stata recentemente scoperta in vari laghi della Scozia settentrionale. La seguente diagnosi si basa in parte su esemplari di queste nuove popolazioni.

Distribuzione di Salvelinus maxillaris secondo IUCN

  

 

S. maxillaris è segnalato in diversi laghi nel nord della Scozia, soprattutto nei bacini tributari del Nord Minch (stretto tra Highland, Isola di Skye e Isole Ebridi). Laghi vicino a Ben Hope, probabilmente Loch Merkland (Sutherland), Loch Clair, Loch Coulin, e forse Loch Maree (Wester Ross), Loch Langavat, Loch na Craobhaig (Isola di Lewis).
