Note sulla sistematica - Walker et al. (1988) segnalano la presenza nel Loch Rannoch di due distinti stock di Salvelinus, diversi per morfologia, habitat, luoghi e periodi di frega, e preferenze alimentari. Salvelinus struanensis descritto da Regan (1911), non sembra corrispondere con la specie descritta da Maitland, ma alla forma illustrata in Walker et al. Più recentemente Kottelat & Freyhof (2007) ritengono indigene di Loch Rannoch tre specie con distinte abitudini alimentari e riproduttive distinte, Salvelinus struanensis planctofago, Salvelinus sp. bentofago e Salvelinus sp. ittiofago. Attualmente S. struanensis è tra le specie riconosciute ICZN, mentre le altre due non sono state ancora descritte e registrate.
