Note sulla sistematica - Frost (1966) descrive la presenza nel lago Windermere di due popolazioni di salmerini a periodi di frega distinti: uno primaverile ed uno autunnale. Le due popolazioni non si incrociano in natura, ma possono essere incrociate in laboratorio. I due gruppi si distinguono morfologicamente per numero e forma delle branchiospine, manca però uno studio approfondito che consider il maggior numero di caratteri possibile. Child (1984: 249), sembra avere ottenuto la prova di isolamento genetico tra i due gruppi. Kottelat & Freyhof (2007) considerano le due popolazioni come specie separate: Salvelinus willuoughbii (a frega autunnale) Salvelinus sp. Windermere (a frega primaverile).  In passato, numerose popolazioni diffuse nei bacini circostanti il lago Windermere sono state attribuite a S. willoughbii, ma sono necessari altri dati per stabilire la loro identità. Le differenze tra S. willoughbii e S. maxillaris sono lievi e forse può trattarsi di popolazioni conspecifiche.
