Note sulla sistematica - La sistematica delle popolazioni di S. namaycush dovrebbe essere riesaminata, potrebbero essere presenti valide sottospecie o specie. Secondo Morrow (1980, "The freshwater fishes of Alaska". University of. B. C. Animal Resources Ecology Library), i tre fenotipi esistenti nel Lago Superiore (Nord America), denominati lean, siscowet e humper o paperbelly sono determinati geneticamente, non si tratta di un adattamento ecologico.

Distribuzione originaria di Salvelinus namaycush

 

 

In nord America la specie è largamente diffusa dal nord del Canada e del sud Alaska fino al New England negli USA ed al bacino dei Grandi Laghi in Canada - USA. In Europa è stato introdotto, con acclimatazione, in alcuni laghi alpini (fino a 2.500 m d'altitudine) dei Pirenei e della Svizzera, oltre che in più laghi, ampi e profondi, della Svezia.
