Specie originaria del Nord America: Bacini afferenti all'Oceano Atlantico ed al Golfo del Messico, dalla Nuova Scozia e dal New Brunswick in Canada fino alla Baia di Mobile in Alabama in USA; Canale di St. Lawrence e Grandi Laghi, bacini tributari della Baia di Hudson e del fiume Mississippi dal Quebec occidentale al Saskatchewan in Canada ed a sud fino alla Louisiana, USA. Il pesce gatto nebuloso è stato introdotto, con acclimatazione, in molti paesi, come riporta la tabella a seguire.
