Distribuzione originaria di Ictalurus punctatus (da http://tolweb.org)

 

Specie originaria del versante atlantico dell'America settentrionale a nord dai bacini di St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay e del Missouri-Mississippi, Quebec e Manitoba Montana, fino al Golfo del Messico a sud. Inoltre è probabilmente indigena nei bacini dal fiume Susquehanna al fiume Neuse, e dal fiume Savannah al lago Okeechobee in Florida, ed ad ovest e nord est di Messico e Nuovo Messico. Il pesce gatto punteggiato è stato introdotto in molti paesi a scopo d'allevamento alimentare ed alieutico, in molti casi la specie si è acclimatata. In Europa sono segnalate popolazioni acclimatate nel basso corso del fiume Ebro in Spagna, nel tratto inferiore del fiume Kuban e nel bacino del fiume Don In Ucraina e Federazione Russa. In Italia la specie è alloctona, acclimatata nel corso medio inferiore dell’Arno, nel fiume Oglio ed in altre località del bacino del Po.
